F.A.Q.
There is no such thing as a stupid question – and we believe this. We will always try to answer your questions no matter what. We have a few popular questions listed here and you can always message us if you cannot find the answer.
What Style of Martial Arts Do you teach?
We teach traditional Okinawan Karate – Okinawa being the birthplace of karate. Our style is Shuri-ryu karate and the more familiar Goju-ryu karate. While our martial art is one of the oldest founding styles, we embrace change and update our style according to best scientific research and best principles of biomechanics and physical exercise.
Our school also teaches traditional Japanese Jujutsu (also known as Jiu-Jitsu) and Okinawan weapons such as Bo (staff) and Filipino Arnis.
I am 65 years old - Is it too late to start?
Not at all. In fact our karate is from Okinawa – a blue zone region which has some of the highest life expectancy rates in the world. A major factor to a healthy life in Okinawa is having a strong sense of purpose in life, a driving force that the Japanese call “ikigai.”
Practicing a martial art will give you a renewed spirit and an interest that is shared among people from all four corners of our planet. Our karate style is especially kind to persons well into old age, as it promotes a relaxed body and strong spirit – our style, Goju means “hard (Go) and soft (Ju).”
What are the cost of classes?
We do not show our fees because you cannot compare us to other schools – our standards of tuition will likely be far greater. Visit our school and decide for yourself. Bring your child if you are a parent and learn about the classes and what we teach. Signing up for six months is our most popular option which includes a free uniform and belt at a very affordable price.
Beside Tuition Fees are there any other costs?
No is the answer. We will even give you a karate uniform and belt (called a dogi or karategi) if you join for three months or more. We do charge an examination fee according to the belt level and these occur two or three times per year.
However, if you wish to practice sparring for competitions, then you will need to purchase protective gear (head protector and/or body protector) and hand and feet guards. We hold a specific sparring class for young adults and kids and parents must purchase protective gear from our dojo.
Can I try a class before deciding?
Yes absolutely. In fact we encourage you to visit our dojo and try a class first before you make up your mind. You can wear sweat pants or shorts and T-shirt. There is no obligation.
Do I need to be fit?
No this is not a requirement. Whatever shape you are in when you arrive, we can garantee you will soon start to feel better both physically and mentally. We will need to know of any particular issues you may have such as knee or back problems (common ailments) so that we can help you avoid muscular pain.
Can I get hurt practicing karate?
Karate training is concerned with delf defense and quite often you are training with a partner. Sore muscles are to be expected as you will be using almost every part of your body. Bruises and cuts are very rare in our dojo and we cannot remember the last time someone needed a band-aid. In fact, we would say that soccer and basketball are far more dangerous!
